Chapter 7

“How the fuck did this happen?”

The moment he’d received the phone call, Dan Rendell had flown by private helicopter to the prison where Matthew Baker had been incarcerated. Just when he thought things were looking up for Amy, with the arrival of Quinn Molloy, her increased security, and her trust in the man. He’d hoped that this was the beginning of an uptick in the quality of her life.

Now he stood in the warden’s office with the district attorney who had prosecuted the case, the head of the US Marshal’s service who had been keeping tabs on the woman living under the name of Amy Ressler, and Bobby Abadelli, the lieutenant in charge of the shift when Matthew Baker managed to ghost his way out of the prison. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so enraged. He glared at Warden James Forrest, barely restraining himself from pounding on the desk.

Forrest, whose face was a pasty gray at this point, looked as if he wished he was any place but here. Instead, he slid his gaze to Abadelli.

“Bobby? This was your shift. Who the hell was in charge of that wing?”

Abadelli didn’t look any too happy himself. “Ian Fletcher. Jim, he was in charge of that wing because he’s been here eight years and has a good record. He puts the fear of god into the inmates. They might hate him, but they also respect him because he doesn’t take shit from anyone.”

“So, what went wrong tonight?” Rendell demanded. “This isn’t the kind of prison people can just slip out of.”

“We’re working on it,”Forrest assured him. “Fletcher seems to have disappeared right after he took a group of three prisoners to the showers. One of the officers went to check when he was doing a walk around and noticed three of the inmates on that wing were missing. He checked the showers, found two of them out cold and Baker in the wind.”

“And no Fletcher,” Marshal Doug DeMarco pointed out.

“No Fletcher,” Abadelli agreed. “I’ve got men scouring the prison for any sign of him, but I’d say at this point he’s in the wind as well.”

Rendell snorted. “No shit.”

“I contacted Washington on the way here,” DeMarco told him. “My boss is already getting a nationwide manhunt underway. We have people and procedures in place so we’re ready for this, unfortunately.” He sighed. “Even though we always hope we won’t have to use them.”

“Good, good.” Rendell blew out a breath. “Now. Everyone pay attention. I want a complete lockdown on all of this. Total silence. Not a word leaks out of here to anyone. You threaten your men with castration, Forrest, if they so much as breathe one word to anyone. Especially the media.”

The warden nodded. “I’ll take care of it. Abadelli can help me. He’s the best lieutenant I’ve got.”

“Listen. I’ve got to call Security Solutions and give them a heads-up. I also want them to start digging and see if they can find anyone connected to Baker we don’t know about.
